Description: Two students sitting on the north bank of Mirror Lake on the Ohio State University campus. Mirror Lake was purchased by OSU along with a piece of land from William Neil. Originally it was spring-fed but it dried up in 1891 and the water was subsequently provided by municipal water supply. Since 1990 there has been a tradition of students jumping into the lake around midnight on the Thursday night prior to the annual football game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines. It is said that the the lake is haunted by multiple ghosts of students who lost their lives in unfortunate accidents in or near the lake. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing a printing press and high wheel bicycle from the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society on display at Page Hall, 1908. Formed in 1885 as the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, the organization eventually became known as the Ohio Historical Society and is now called the Ohio History Connection. Originally the society’s collections were held at the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus, but in 1894, they were moved to Orton Hall on the Ohio State campus. The organization and its museum remained on campus, housed first in Page Hall and then in Sullivant Hall, until 1970, when they moved to their present location adjacent to the Ohio State Fairgrounds. As of 2014, Page Hall is home to the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. View on Ohio Memory.

The building was demolished in 1971 but replaced with a replica by 1976 that is still in use today. Description: Watercolor of the Ohio Statehouse by Ralph Fanning, ca. 1935-1945. The Ohio capitol was built between 1839 and 1861 in the Greek Revival style, resembling the Parthenon in Greece. One of the best examples of Greek Revival civic architecture in the United States, it is also one of the oldest working statehouses in the nation. It is a masonry building, consisting largely of brick and Columbus limestone quarried from the west banks of the Scioto River. Artist and art historian Ralph Fanning was born on Long Island in 1889. A Quaker, Fanning served in France in compassionate non-military service during World War I. In the 1920s, he joined the Ohio State University Art Department, becoming a full professor in 1924. Fanning was a skilled artist, especially talented at depicting bridges and buildings. He sketched and painted numerous buildings in Columbus and throughout Ohio. In 1950, Fanning became ill and was later diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The disease affected his work, but he continued to paint and sketch. View on Ohio Memory.
